Date: December 9, 2010 We are pleased to announce the Southern Area of the Links Incorporated Childhood Obesity Prevention Kickoff celebration and press conference. This event will take place on Thursday, December 9th from 10am until 1:30pm at Morehouse School of Medicine located at 720 Westview Dr., SW Atlanta, GA 30310. The press conference will begin promptly at 11am in the Atrium of the National Center for Primary Care building. The event will inform and encourage our prestigious audience of Atlanta Public School children, future health professionals, the local media, and other constituents on efforts to eliminate childhood obesity as well as the need to embrace healthy habits among the African-American population.

Date: October 28-30th, 2010 Did you know that men are nearly four times more likely to develop bladder cancer than women? Age matters too, older age is the single greatest risk cancer for developing bladder cancer. This information allows us to paint the picture of a patient population at greatest risk: the elderly male. Dr. Shahrokh Shariat, a leading expert in treating urological malignancies states. “It is imperative that health care practitioners and researchers from disparate disciplines collectively focus efforts towards gaining a better understanding of what the consequences of bladder cancer and its treatments are.” To learn more about the newest treatments and innovations in bladder cancer, including the surrounding controversy regarding screening- join the ISMH at The Men’s Health World Congress, in Nice, France from October 28-30th.

Date: October 31st, 2010 Would you like to expand the scope of your practice? For those clinicians who want to become forerunners in their field, Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh, ISMH president, will be offering a unique CME course “How to Establish a Men’s Health Center” as part of the Men’s Health World Congress 2010. The event will take place October 31st in Nice, France and promises to provide physicians with “insider information” and strategies to ultimately bring more men to their practice. Participants can expect to learn how to start-up a men’s health center from A-Z, while learning about patient flow, logistics, publicity, economics and more. Find out more about the CME Course!
Date: August 26-27, 2009 Community Voices hosted representatives from the National Urban League Headquarters and several affiliates including the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas, Lorain County Urban League, and the Columbia Urban League for a discussion on the Save Our Sons: Diabetes and Obesity prevention program. The aim was to provide a rigorous training that included in-depth presentations and didactic experiences to stimulate and encourage intellectual exchanges that supported the establishment of parallel cross-site project priorities and practices. Highlights included faculty from Morehouse School of Medicine with areas of specific expertise (e.g. accessing and utilizing personal medical records in community projects) providing presentations to attendees.
Date: September 15-17, 2009 A comprehensive training program was developed by CV staff for the community health workers and project directors participating in the SOS program implementation in Lorain County Ohio. The two-day in- training built on the SOS Executive Training. It also incorporated site specific concerns related to technical assistance calls with affiliate staff, focus group findings, key informant responses, and board mandates dictated by the Morehouse School of Medicine Institutional Review Board (IRB) as well as the Save Our Sons Curriculum, participant recruitment and retention and working with diverse populations.
Date: September 19, 2009 The Lorain County Urban League with support from Community Voices held a dynamic community kickoff event on Saturday September 19, 2009 to introduce the Save Our Sons project to the community, recruit African American Men to be a part of this project and to provide free health screenings to the community.

Date: October 13-15, 2009 Community Voices staff including Dr. Kisha Holden, Starla Hairston-Blanks and Melva Robertson conducted depth training and presentations on community health education during the National Urban League’s Whitney M. Young Leadership Conference in Cincinnati, OH.
Date: November 21, 2009 The Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas with support from Community Voices and the Moreland YMCA held a dynamic community kickoff event on Saturday November 21, 2009 to introduce the Save Our Sons project to the community, recruit African American Men to be a part of this project. The event included prizes and raffles for the community as well as free health screenings.
Date: March 30, 2010 Community Voices hosted leadership from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals to discuss issues related to African American Men’s Health and the Save Our Sons project on March 30, 2010.
Date: June 7-10, 2010 The Lorain County Urban League in collaboration with Community Voices was invited to present at the University of Southern Mississippi 2010 Unity Conference June 7-10, 2010 in Cincinnati, OH . The topic of the presentation Save Our Sons and the role of community health workers in improving African American men’s health.
Date: June 26, 2010 The Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas with support from Community Voices conducted a graduation event for the over men who participated in the Save Our Sons program.
Date: June 24-25, 2010 Partnership with the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, Community Voices recently conducted a successful pilot Job Readiness program in the city of Atlanta, where we worked with approximately 17 ex-offenders selected by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles (GBPP). This two-day collaborative event consisted of the following:

Local participating employers represented the fields of manufacturing, construction, landscaping, industrial supplies, and car wash services.
At the end of the two-day event each participant received a Certificate of Completion. Significantly, within three weeks, five participants successfully obtained employment (about a 29% success rate) as a direct result of the event. Additional positive results are expected. This result is particularly encouraging given that the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that the average length of time required to secure employment is roughly six months, and often double that (12 months) in the case of people with criminal records.
Date: July 9-11th, 2010 The 5th Japan-Asean Conference on Men’s Health & Aging took place July, 9-11, 2010 in Borneo. Representing the International Society of Men´s Health was Dr. Michael Zitzmann, who presented a pre-conference workshop on ‘Testosterone Replacement Therapy for the Primary Care Physician’. Dr. Hui Meng Tan presented a keynote address, highlighting the concept of men’s health as it pertains to the Asian community. The field of Men’s Health is rapidly growing and is taking precedence throughout Japan and Asia, in part due to the age structure of the population.
Date: July 17, 2010 Community Voices partnered with Radio One in the 2010 Yolanda Adams Health & Wellness Tour in Atlanta at St. Philip AME Church. The health fair promoted healthy living by discussing disease prevention and increasing awareness in the community about the importance of regular health screenings. Panelists for this event included Dr. Edwards, Dr. Rust, Dr. Smith and Mr. Wiley who discussed with the audience issues related to the Healthcare reform and the bill’s impact on the uninsured.
