The Southern Area of the Links Commission on Childhood Obesity Prevention

Project Overview
The Commission on Childhood Obesity was created by the Southern Area of the Links, Inc. in conjunction with Community Voices to address the underlying causes of childhood obesity among African American children. This partnership aims to: 1) Establish a culturally relevant evidence-based framework for improving the health of AA children as it relates to obesity prevention. 2) Develop obesity and diabetes-related research, programs/ community based prevention strategies that can positively impact the lives of African American children. 3) Identify health and social policies which support healthier African American children and families. The commission will address the following policy areas which cover school nutrition, physical activity, community gardens and community empowerment.

Program Activities
Seven Link chapters were selected to receive funding the implement the childhood obesity prevention curriculum, increase awareness of the issues and to engage local communities in policy change beginning January 2010. A children’s activity book is also in development.
