Georgia at the Forefront Nationally in the Use of Imprisonment
As of 2008, there were 54,016 people held in Georgia state prisons, placing the state fifth in the nation in its incarcerated population. Georgia trails only California, Texas, Florida, and New York in terms of the number of people in prison. In addition to a high number of people incarcerated, Georgia also incarcerates its citizens at a high rate. The state’s rate of incarceration of 542 people per 100,000 population is 20% higher than the national average for states of 450 per 100,000. By these measures, Georgia is at the forefront nationally in the use of imprisonment.

Action Agenda for Prisoners Reentering the Community
Each year, more than 650,000 people cross the boundary between community and corrections when they are released from the nation’s jails and prisons. A working group convened by Community Voices and the National Academy for State Health Policy in Spring 2006 focused on the narrow pathway between prison cell and community – and the actions and investments that make or break the process dubbed “reentry.”

Where are the Men?
By June 2005, there were over 2.1 million people incarcerated in jails and prisons in the United States. The mass incarceration of individuals in the U.S. has had a detrimental impact on people of color, particularly African American men. Due to the vast numbers of African men who are incarcerated, they bear a substantial burden in this mass imprisonment movement. As we move forward, we must acknowledge that African American men did not arrive at this junction on their own accord. In order to comprehend the dimensions of the problems that African American men face today, it is necessary to understand the history of these policies that form the social welfare foundation in our society.
