Community Voices will be showcased in the February 2006, Vol 17, No 2 of the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. This issue largely depicts the work and analysis of community-based access to health care projects conducted as part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Voices Initiative. The issue highlights efforts aimed at eliminating health disparities using education, outreach, interventions and policy initiatives. The authors are individuals on the frontlines of building and implementing health systems that assure quality care for disenfranchised residents.
Dr. David Satcher’s opening commentary on “Challenging the Status Quo” sets the stage for the 13 articles which follows covering issues about community health workers, reducing emergency room visits, transitional dynamics for inmates returning to communities, oral health disparities, coalitions for HIV prevention, immigrant families accessing US health insurance, and smoking and tobacco control among the poor and underserved.
The guest editors from Morehouse School of Medicine include: Ronald L. Braithwaite, Henrie Treadwell, Kisha Braithwaite and Marguerite Ro from Columbia University.
